Surprisingly, what you think you may know about braces and orthodontic treatment might be wrong if you’ve never visited an orthodontist before. There is a lot of misinformation and misconceptions surrounding orthodontic treatment, which can sometimes be blamed on movies we see growing up, or even our own childhood experiences. Unfortunately, this can cause people to never consider getting braces or clear appliances. We’re here to straighten out some misconceptions and get you on the road to a beautiful smile, read on to see the top misconceptions we’ve heard.
#1 – Orthodontic Treatment is Extremely Painful
Yes, orthodontic treatment is going to be uncomfortable. But usually only for a few days! After all, you are shifting and moving your teeth and jaw. This is going to cause you to experience aches and pains, however, it is not extremely painful. Only about half of our patients ever need to take any medication for the discomfort.
If you do happen to experience extreme pain or prolonged periods of discomfort with orthodontic treatment, Always reach out to our office as this is not expected and we need to adjust your appliances and sometimes there could be another cause for your discomfort altogether. The good news is that it really only takes a few days to get adjusted to your new gear, once that happens, you won’t feel the discomfort you might have when you first get braces on or when you get them tightened.
With the increase in technology for both braces and removable aligners like Invisalign that we invest, the level of discomfort our patient feels during your orthodontic care had decreased dramatically! Smaller and more comfortable appliances that deliver lower forces consistently allow for faster orthodontic care that is more comfortable! A true WIN-WIN for our patients.
#2 – Unsightly Metal Brackets and Wires are the Only Options Available for Orthodontic Treatment
In the past, the only orthodontic treatment that was available was traditional metal braces. That isn’t the case anymore. Orthodontists now provide patients with several different treatment options. Some of those treatment options include:
- Clear Braces
- Auxiliary Appliances
- Traditional Metal Braces
- Surgical Orthodontics
Clear appliances, such as Invisalign, are invisible braces that allow you to improve your smile without the need for visible wires and brackets. We have invested thousands of hours to perfect using aligners to allow us to achieve beautiful smiles and we are now able to correct about 95% of orthodontic problems with aligners! It is important to schedule an initial consultation with an orthodontist that is an expert if you are interested in exploring options like Invisalign.
#3 – Braces can Interfere with Some of Your Favorite Activities or Hobbies
Some people believe wearing braces or undergoing orthodontic treatment could cause problems to activities such as singing, playing musical instruments, or sports. The truth is, they most likely won’t. Braces or other types of orthodontic treatment can cause you to experience a slight lisp or changes with how you speak or sing. This means there may be a slight initial period of adjustment as you get comfortable with your braces or orthodontic appliance, just like with anything new in life. This period usually only lasts about 3-7 days. Once you are comfortable with them, you won’t notice a difference. We have patients that have been very successful with their care that are giving lectures, holding public meetings and are even on the News!
If you take part in full-contact sports, we always recommend wearing a mouthguard. This is especially true if you are titanium or ceramic braces. The mouthguard will protect your braces so they don’t get damaged while you are taking part in your favorite sports activity.
If you are really concerned about not being able to take part in a favorite sports event or activity, you can talk to Dr. Strickland about using aligners like Invisalign. These aligners can be removed and offer a small amount of protection. You can improve your smile without having to experience limitations caused by brackets and wires.
