Fixed functional appliances

While many patients’ treatment can be completed with braces alone, some orthodontic care will require alternate applications to increase the efficiency of tooth movement and achieve the most desirable outcome. These additional appliances can help correct bite issues such as overjet or underbite.

SPRING CLASS II or OVERJET CORRECTORS and CLASS III or UNDERBITE CORRECTORS
While many patients that have excess or insufficient overjet can have their bite corrected with elastics (rubber bands), in certain instances we may recommend an appliance that will be more effective and efficient. The main difference between these appliances and elastics is that the appliance is not removable by the patient. Because they stay in all day, the appliances correct the excess overjet very efficiently and only take a few days to get used to talking and eating. If you are a candidate for an appliance to help correct your overjet, we will discuss it with you at your complimentary consultation.

Mandibular position CLASS II OR OVERJET CORRECTORS
The Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance, or MARA, is an appliance that helps in the correction of excess overjet. The MARA offers some unique advantages and can correct excess overjet without having braces on all the teeth. This decreases the number of months that a patient has to wear braces. The purpose of the appliance is to move the lower jaw and the lower teeth forward and the upper molars and teeth backwards for a more comfortable and healthier bite.

Invisalign Mandibular Advancement
The Invisalign aligner system has a built in functionality that is very similar to the clinical effects and forces of the MARA appliance. There are wings that are built into the upper and lower aligners that fit together to apply forces on the teeth to correct excess overjet. Since they are built into the aligners, they have many advantages including increased comfort and minimal interference when eating.
